iOS 5 Beta 4: I just did a software update this morning on my iPhone 4 all via WiFi without plugging in to iTunes and it worked quite well. The update did take a while to download but once it downloaded, everything else went smoothly. At last no more plugging in your phone to iTunes to do updates.

Maglev - High Speed Train Experience Video

Yesterday I had an opportunity to ride on the MAGLEV in Shanghai which is a high speed train that levitates on magnets and can go over 400 km/hr. Below you will find a video on how fast this thing really goes.

What is Maglev? From Wikipedia: Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation), is a system of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles, predominantly trains, using magnetic levitation from a very large number of magnets for lift and propulsion. This method has the potential to be faster, quieter and smoother than wheeled mass transit systems. The power needed for levitation is usually not a particularly large percentage of the overall consumption; most of the power used is needed to overcome air drag, as with any other high speed train.

The Politics of NBN

I did want to talk a bit about this. There has been a lot of hot debates on why the NBN should not go ahead, most of it is political and most people are on party lines when it comes to the NBN. The Liberal party constantly nags about how bad the NBN will be and how much debt this is going to bring to Australians. Being involved in technology for the last 30 years my opinion is that the NBN is the future and the NBN is not about users downloading heaps of movies or music and surfing. The NBN is about advances in different fields like Medicine, Technology, Research, Video conferencing, businesses and a whole bunch more.

Day 2 on NBN

Day 2 On NBN

I just thought I would give you an update after the 2nd day on the Fibre connection. It has still maintained the same speeds and it's been consistent without any drops to the connection. By this time on ADSL2+ I would have lost line sync a few times. So far so good. I have also put up some screen shots of today's speed compared to the 1st day and its been fairly consistent. The Fritz!Box 7390 has been taking a beating with all the uploads and downloads I have been doing. All good and the box doesn't feel any hotter than with my previous ADSL connection.
